What Causes Knee Pain?
- Muscle or ligament strains or tears
- Arthritis
- Constant stress on the knee (due to sports or the nature of work)
The most common causes of knee pain in Singapore are:
- Meniscus or ligament tear
- Arthritis or wear and tear
- Patellofemoral pain syndrome (also known as runner’s knee)
- Iliotibial band syndrome (also known as IT band syndrome or ITBS)
A meniscus tear occurs when the small C-shaped cartilage that acts as a cushion in the knee joint is injured or torn. It typically happens when the knee is subjected to pressure and rotation while the feet are firmly planted.
Patellofemoral pain syndrome or runner’s knee is a dull pain around the patella, which is the front of your knee. It is typically caused by the way you walk or run, poor foot support, and excessive training.
Iliotibial band syndrome or IT band syndrome results from persistent friction in the area where the IT band crosses the knee. It is essentially an overuse strain injury caused by repetitive motion, commonly seen in athletes (cyclists, runners, and hikers are especially susceptible).
Symptoms
Knee pain can be described in a variety of ways, from muscle aches to inflexibility in the knee. What’s more, you may experience a grinding sensation or hear a clicking sound whenever you move your knee. Knee pain can deteriorate further if you stand or walk too long and run and jump frequently.
If you suspect that you’re suffering from a potential meniscus tear, you might experience a popping sensation that would indicate that a piece of your cartilage has come loose. You might also notice some swelling and tenderness around the knee joint and feel that your knee cannot support your weight or might give way.
For runner’s knee, the most common symptoms include a painful sensation in and around the knee when you are active or after sitting too long with your knees bent. You would also be able to hear clicking sounds of the kneecap when you bend and straighten your knee.
The main symptom of IT band syndrome is sharp pain coming from the outer side of your knee. The pain may go away after warming up or doing some stretches at the start. But over time, the pain gets worse as you exercise. You may also experience some warmth and redness on the outer side of your knee.
Knee Pain Relief & Treatment
Knee pain can be treated with several self-management methods, alongside consulting a knee pain specialist in Singapore.
Weight loss, proper footwear, suitable knee supports, medication, physiotherapy, non-standard therapies, and regular fitness activity all play an important role in knee pain relief and treatment. However, you may need to undergo surgical procedures if your knee pain intensifies over time.
When Should I See A Knee Pain Specialist
If your knee pain does not go away despite taking sufficient rest and trying self-management techniques, if it interferes with your everyday activities or if you are experiencing instability, persistent grinding, and hearing a clicking sound around the knee area, you should consult a physiotherapist or knee pain specialist in Singapore.
Generally, your doctor or physiotherapist would first ask about your injury and conduct a physical examination to check your knee’s range of movement and determine the cause of the pain. You may need an MRI or other imaging tests to assist your doctor in determining the extent of your injuries. Your doctor may recommend x-rays to rule out other potential causes.
If the tests fail to pinpoint the source of the pain, you may require an arthroscopy. Arthroscopy is a procedure where small incisions are made to allow the doctor to insert a camera and observe the injury more clearly.
Upon a successful diagnosis, your doctor or physiotherapist would recommend a suitable course of action for pain relief. This may include medication, physiotherapy, or surgery in more extreme cases.

There Are Three Main Categories Of Pain:
Acute Pain
Lasts for a short time and occurs following surgery or trauma or other condition. It acts as a warning to the body to seek help. Although it usually improves as the body heals, in some cases, it may not.
Cancer Pain
Lasts beyond the time expected for healing following surgery, trauma or other condition. It can also exist without a clear reason at all. Although chronic pain can be a symptom of other disease, it can also be a disease in its own right, characterised by changes within the central nervous system.
Chronic Pain
Can occur in patients with early stage and advanced disease, and in cancer survivors as a severe and debilitating side-effect of treatment.
